Term 2 Science Unit Reflection

This term we have been learning about the three states of matter (liquid, solid and gas.) This week we conducted our own experiment the year six’s had to base there experiment on ,Changes to materials can be reversible, such as melting, freezing, evaporating; or irreversible, reversible  such as burning and rusting.

sublimation is solid to the gas. condensation is gas to a liquid. evaporation is liquid to gas. I understand that a prediction is a really important part of the procedural text. and its also really important to have an aim to guide  you along the experiment. I wonder what would happen if you didn’t have an aim or a prediction?

The most important thing I have learnt would have to be learning how to conduct our own experiment and writing it up in a procedural text, I learnt this when me and my partner had to conduct a science experiment and convert it to an procedure text. I’m going to use these skills in high school when we have to conduct our our experiment

100WC WEEK#23

I was looking out the living room window in an orphanage, and saw children playing with happy faces out side of this window, but best of all they were with there parents I  imagined what it would be like to have all I could see.

I’ve been her since I was 6 years of age, but no, no ones ever dreamed of adopting me or walking in to this trashed orphanage   well what I call home. I always wished I could have a family or even remember what it was like to have one. But no i don’t remember anything, nothing at all.

My goal was to describe in more detail when I wont to show emotion and when I wont the reader to feel that emotion.

BTN

OzHarvest trucks collect food from shopping centres, butchers, fruit and veg shops and bakeries! All that food can make a really big difference for those in need. Right across Australia huge amounts of food’s being wasted every day. In fact a new study from Victoria has just found that 3.5 kilograms of food is grown for every person in Melbourne each day. But people are only eating 1.2 kilograms of that. That means close to two thirds is ending up in the bin! And they say there are plenty of other things you can do to reduce food waste. You could eat it for the next day for lunch or something if you’ve got leftovers. You could freeze it, put it in the fridge. Plan out how much food you need instead of just like grabbing all these things and not using half of it and just chucking it out. And you can like use it for, if you do gardening, you can compost it and stuff Well they really appreciate what we’re doing and giving them, and they come in every Tuesday and yeah we just give away all this food that’s donated to us from OzHarvest. I wonder if south Australia will limit there food wast to a small amount?

science experiment term 2

mixing oil, vinegar and bicarb soda together

This term we have been learning about science, mostly the three states of matter (with are gas, liquid and solid). This week we conducted our own experiment. Shanice and I experiment was mixing bicarb soda, vinegar and oil together. Changes to materials can be reversible, such as melting, freezing, evaporating; or irreversible, such as burning and rusting

Aim: To identify the effect of oil, vinegar and bicarb soda combined in an open bottle.

Hypothesis and prediction: We think there will be a chemical reaction but the oil will do nothing to the experiment.

If you would wish do read our procedure text click here

Observations   if you wish to see a photo of the experiment click here

Shanice’s observation-  When we poured the ingredients in, it started fizzing up around half the bottle. The fizzing went down and the bicarb soda and the vinegar combined but some of the vinegar did not combined. After we started swishing it around the bicarb soda, started becoming like goo. After a while the liquid went up and started floating on the top. The bicarb soda was sitting on the bottom and doing nothing.

Kate’s observation- After we poured all the ingredients in the bottle it fizzed up to about half way inside the bottle just like regular vinegar and bicarb soda would. After all the bubbles that settled the vinegar, oil and food dye floated to the top of all the bicarb soda and didn’t combined after all, I feel the oil did nothing the to experiment.

Discussion: This happens because the oils viscosity is too high to mix with the vinegar’s low viscosity.

Conclusion: Our experiment wasn’t successful because when we mixed the oil it just sat on the top of the vinegar and the bicarb soda. We learnt that oil does not combined with vinegar and bicarb soda. Yes, the results were as we predicted because we thought the oil would sit on the top and do nothing. We could change the experiment by instead of adding oil add water instead because then the water will combined with the vinegar and bicarb soda. A follow up experiment we could do vinegar and bicarb soda, looking at its properties.

100wc week#22-All of one stupid mistake

I was in the middle of my trip to India on a bright yellow Airplane. Oh and did I forget to mention that me a 12 year old boy is on my own in a plane. I’m on my own because my dad died a few weeks ago and my mum died as I was born. All I can think about is how I haven’t eat’n for two days strate. I sometimes feel like my whole life is just swept away all of one stupid mistake, not blowing the candle out in my living room were my dad was sleeping. But I moved on.

I set a goal for my self which was to set a clear message which was never giving up and to move on in bad things that happen in life, no matter how old you are or what your going through.

BTN – STORM EROSION

From Queensland right down to Tasmania, Australia’s eastern coast took a battering during these huge storms recently. From Queensland right down to Tasmania, Australia’s eastern coast took a battering during these huge storms recently. Erosion is a natural force and it’s something that’s constantly happening all around us. It’s part of a cycle that forms coasts, shapes mountain ranges, and digs out caves. More vegetation is one thing but some researchers say we really need to stop building so close to the beach. Because big storms and the erosion that comes with them are a very natural part of life in Australia. I wonder how many time it happens or how long till the next one?

prepared speech (is electricity a form of matter)

what I found difficult was when I researched the question (is electricity a form of matter) nothing came up for kids so my speech was really hard to understand. Some of my strong points in my speech was probably in my first paragraph and the first sentence (electricity is not matter, it is energy. Electricity is just the motion of electrons. You wouldn’t call the motion of water matter, would you?) I thought that because it was a little bit of a quote and it used rhetorical questions. I could get higher results next time if I make it a bit easer to understand at our age level or explaining the words in a lot more detail. I can use the skills of speaking and listening in other subjects when doing oral presentations and listing to other people presentations.

speech:

Good afternoon 5/6B today ill be talking to you about the question (is electricity a form of matter?)

electricity is not matter, it is energy. Electricity is just the motion of electrons. You wouldn’t call the motion of water matter, would you? Water and electrons are both matter, but the flow of water and electricity are not. plasma conducts electricity but that does not mean that electricity is a form of matter. Electricity is generated by the movement of electrons, and physicists consider electrons matter, even though they don’t have traditional properties of matter like mass and volume.

||……….
We look at five states of matter on the site. Solids, liquids, gases, plasmas, and Bose-Einstein condensates also nown as (BEC). Theys are different states that have different physical properties. Each of these states is also known as a phase. Elements and compounds can move from one phase to another when specific physical conditions change. For example, when the temperature of a system goes up, the matter in the system becomes more excited and active. If enough energy is placed in a system, a phase change may occur as the matter moves to a more active state.

…………..

Think about it this way. Let’s say you have a glass of water (H2O). When the temperature of the water goes up, the molecules get more excited and bounce around a lot more. If you give a liquid water molecule enough energy, it escapes the liquid phase and becomes a gas.

so this concludes my speech on is electricity a form of matter just to recap my points firstly the motion of electrons and the flow of liquids secondly looking deeply in to the five states of matter. and lately some examples of my points.

100wc week#21

I was in the middle of a soccer pitch waiting for the game to start. Nerves shaking through my legs but so excited to play my last and final match of the season.

The whistle blew and everyone disappeared of the court I didn’t know what was happing. I ran over to my team even though they were in a huddle , I still was confused. the whistle blew again and I rushed over to play my last and finale game but both my team and the opposing team was still in a huddle whispering i didn’t know what to think.

BTN – WOMEN’S RUGBY

But you might be wondering, what is Rugby Sevens? Well, it’s basically a quicker version of Rugby Union. The key stuff is the same, like only being able to throw sideways or backwards, and tries are still worth 6 points But regular games are a lot shorter; just 14 minutes instead of 80,  and instead of it being 15 a-side, teams are just 7 a-side on the same size pitch. That means players have way more room to move, which means a lot more tries. (For example, during the 2015 Rugby Union World Cup tries were scored on average every 28 minutes. But in the Sevens season that same year, it was once every 3 minutes!)

lots of people start at a young age like around 5 or 6. rugby 7s league looks like a really hard sport to play. I think it’s just a lifelong dream for a lot of us. It’s been my dream since I was five years old I think.

I wonder if the Australian girls rugby 7s league will win a gold metal at the Olympics?
